Organized by the New-York Historical Society, Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusionexhibition will span from September 26th, 2014 to April 19, 2015. The exhibition explores the centuries-long history of trade and immigration between China and the United States. The exhibit narrative extends from the late eighteenth century to the present and includes all regions of the country, thus interpreting the Chinese American saga as a key part of American history. In conjunction with the exhibition, on October 2, 2014 the New-York Historical Society presents the American premiere of the Discovery Channel Asia’s groundbreaking seriesChineseness with a live discussion between featured artist Yang Chihung and the host of the series Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang. The pioneering documentary series examines the idea of a renaissance in Chinese identity through the lives and work of four contemporary Chinese artists and illustrates the different perspectives on the contemporary Chinese consciousness.
Amidst Chinese American with outstanding contribution, the New-York Historical Society hand-picked Yang Chihung as the representative figure in the world of visual arts. For over thirty years Yang has been living in the U.S., he is the first artist of Chinese descent to be awarded The Clocktower residency, and his pioneering works soon land him the “Outstanding Asian-American Artist” award. During his time in the US, Yang wrote on the latest artistic trends and introduced newest Western art theories to the Chinese art scene, which was later compiled as New Trends in Modern Art, thereby exerting a long and lasting influence on upcoming artists. Over the course of Chinese American immigration history to the bustling present, Yang has developed an intellectual system that integrates culture from East and West; it successfully crosses beyond the boundaries of cultures, and establishes his unique artistic interpretation. Yang Chihung can be rightfully named one of the most distinguished Chinese American artists of the century.
