Asia Art Center has been an advocate of post-war Asian art, which is a pivotal period deeply embedded in the gallery’s developmental landscape. The avant-garde movement led by the Fifth Moon Group and the Eastern Art Association in the 1950s to 60s, which propelled the modernization of Taiwanese art after the war has proven to be most significant. Asia Art Center has the honor of participating in the reopening of the National Museum of History with the exhibition The Birth of Modernist Art Movement in Taiwan, which features esteemed artists such as CHUANG Che, CHU Weibor, FONG Chung-Ray, YANG Yuyu, and CHEN Tingshih, all of whom the gallery has enjoyed long-term collaboration with.

The exhibition The Birth of Modernist Art Movement in Taiwan is on view at the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, Taipei Branch until April 28th. This exhibition aims to retell Taiwan’s history of art by illustrating a comprehensive picture of the post-war modern art movements in the country through the developments of the Fifth Moon Art Group and Eastern Art Association. As art groups whose practices were considered unorthodox at the time, they were widely influential from the 1950s to 1970s. This grand-scale exhibition brings together 144 artworks by 41 artists from the collection of 7 public institutions and more than 30 establishments raging from the artists’ studios, private collections, art foundations and commercial galleries.

The exhibition Geometric Variations currently on show in Asia Art Center features selected works by CHU Weibor from the Eastern Art Association and two pioneering artists, Fadjar Sidik and Handrio, who promoted avant-garde art in Indonesia during the same period. Despite diverse cultural and political backgrounds, these three artists sought breakthroughs and innovations within their respective environments. The unconventional ideas they pioneered continue to have a profound and lasting impact on the contemporary art community. Geometric Variations is on display in Asia Art Center in Taipei until April 28th, inviting audiences to explore abstract art across different cultural contexts and its reflections on the artists’ philosophical, political, and musical spheres of thought, reminiscing about the golden age of modern art from the 1950s to the 1970s!
