Yuyu Yang’s Phoenix Sculptures Unfold Across Hong Kong at Lee Gardens

As Hong Kong Art Month unfolds, Lee Gardens, in collaboration with Asia Art Center, presents the public art exhibition Ascendant: The Sculptural Legacy of Yuyu Yang, which has recently opened to the public. The exhibition brings together key works from Yang's celebrated Phoenix series alongside other important sculptures.

Located in the heart of Causeway Bay, Lee Gardens is one of the few urban districts in Hong Kong shaped through a comprehensive approach that integrates culture, lifestyle, and refined sensibilities. By activating its public spaces as sites for artistic intervention, it has developed an ongoing cultural framework in which art becomes part of everyday urban experience. On view are major works including Advent of the Phoenix III (1970), Advent of the Phoenix IV (1991), Phoenix (1976), and Growth II (1988), allowing sculpture to move beyond static display and become embedded within the flow of the city.

Concurrently, Asia Art Center will present Advent of the Phoenix I (1970) at Art Basel Hong Kong, Booth 3E19. Together, the dual presentations across Lee Gardens and Art Basel Hong Kong offer a multifaceted view of how Yang approached the Phoenix motif across different periods, articulating its form and presence through distinct sculptural languages.

A foundational figure in Taiwanese modern sculpture, Yuyu Yang was also a key member of the Fifth Moon Painting Group and a mentor to Ju Ming, a major figure in contemporary sculpture known internationally for his Taichi series. Yang's practice synthesizes Eastern philosophy, modern form, and material exploration, and is deeply informed by the concept of the unity between humanity and nature. Marked by a highly distinctive sculptural language, his work occupies a singular position within the broader narrative of modern art. Long committed to tracing and advancing the development of Taiwanese modern art, Asia Art Center's dual presentations during Hong Kong Art Month further underscore the historical depth and cultural significance of this artistic lineage in an international context.
