Asia Art Center and Juming Museum join forces to present Inner and Outer Worlds: International Contemporary Paintings Exhibition, a landmark showcase of various artists from the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Juming Museum stands as the artist's largest and most ambitious work. Built on land he personally acquired and designed, the museum includes architecture, vast outdoor sculpture parks, and more than 2,000 works are by and from Ju Ming. After 12 years of construction, the museum inaugurated in 1999, and it remains dedicates to academic research, exhibitions, and children's art education which is an enduring testament to Ju Ming's vision.
Spanning 110,000 square meters and overlooking both mountains and sea, the museum integrates art with nature. Sculptures and exhibitions are carefully arranged to foster dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Widely recognised as one of Taiwan's significant art museums, it has also become a favorite destination for school programs and family visits, due to its welcoming environment and strong educational initiatives.
Juming Museum holds its mission to promote outstanding art from the world. In addition to showcase Ju Ming's own sculptures, Juming museum also supports paintings of both Western and Taiwanese artists with strong potential. Thus, Inner and Outer Worlds exhibition was born. Painting is a discipline with a long global history and enduring vitality. From the development of oil paint, which revolutionized European painting as early as the 13th century, to watercolour and gouache, beloved by artists working en plein air, painting has continually evolved in dialogue with artistic practice. The invention of acrylics and oil bars in the 20th century further expanded the range of materials available, paving the way for the widespread embrace of mixed-media painting.
This exhibition brings together paintings by sixteen artists, organized into four thematic strands. Sensibility highlights works by Andrew Pierre Hart, Florence Hutchings, Charlotte Keates, and Guy Yanai that capture direct responses to the world, ranging from depictions of everyday objects to interior scenes that invite speculation. Cultural / Social Commentary features Tobe Kan and Xiao Qi-Heng, whose paintings document personal experiences in foreign contexts and reflect the impact of cultural diversity. Memory is explored through the practices of Howard Fonda, Katja Farin, Katarína Janečková Walshe, and Joseph Olisaemeka Wilson, who weave together subjective and objective perspectives to reflect on personal histories. Finally, Fantasy presents works by Bai Yiyi, Michelle Blade, Claire Colette, Carlo D'Anselmi, Etan Pavavalung, and David Brian Smith, where imagined scenes are transformed into painterly form, extending a fascination with the fantastical that has captivated artists from antiquity to the present.
This collaborated exhibition explores how painting—a medium often viewed as traditional—continues to resonate with contemporary audiences whose worldview is shaped by photography, digital media, and artificial intelligence. The exhibition also underscores the universal nature of human emotion, transcending race, age, gender, nationality, religion, and social background. By bringing together diverse artistic voices under one roof, Inner and Outer Worlds affirms painting's enduring power to connect people across cultures and generations, and to inspire new ways of seeing in the present day.
