A+ Contemporary is pleased to present artist Jin Jinghong’s solo exhibition “SNOD SIM PARK”, opening on September 6, 2019. Continuing his exploration on the theme of “artificial landscape”, Jin Jinghong constructs a virtual park scene in the exhibition space through his deconstruction and recombination of landscape elements.
The concept of “SNOD SIM PARK” comes from Jin Jinghong’s experience of playing video games where it promotes his imagination for unconventional scenes. In the “SimCity” games, the player develops a personalized simulation city by arranging various modules such as buildings and parks. Inspired by this, Jin Jinghong creates paintings that are collaged with decomposed and fragmented elements from landscape designing or other materials that he collected. He reorganizes these“modules”to create his own landscape in a way that incorporates artificiality. With their original narrativity and logicality being reduced, Jin Jinghong constructs a strange yet familiar man-made landscape in the three-dimensional space, creating a “real” simulation park. For the artist, this kind of simulated landscape is even closer to his personal experience in reality than the landscapes following the laws of perspective.
Jin Jinghong’s training and working background in theater, film and television art design also naturally leads to his creative consciousness which has roots in the principle of hypothesis of stage from dramatic theories. In theatrical stage design, a sense of time, space and atmosphere is achieved through the combination of flats on the stage and other methods of building the set. Whether it is on the stage or in the construction of “SNOD SIM PARK”, clues from the world of reality are interwoven with Jin Jinghong’s “modules”. With imagination and experience, they extend to a scene of virtual park. Years of experience in both theatrical design and painting has shaped Jin Jinghong’s own system in his “artificial landscape”. Artistic reconstruction of natural landscapes inevitably involves human intervention. Throughout Jin Jinghong’s creation, there is his constant reflection about the “real” and the “virtual”.
The exhibition will be on view until October 27, 2019.
