Asia Art Center will present works by Taiwanese artist Eleng Luluan at the inaugural Pavilion. Long active in major international museum exhibitions, biennials, and triennials, she presents in Taiwan a body of work grounded in her ancestral homeland and lived experience.
As a descendant of Rukai nobility, Eleng Luluan was immersed from an early age in weaving and other forms of cultural transmission, acquiring a deep, embodied understanding of Indigenous traditions. Her artistic practice centers on themes of cultural loss, colonial trauma, contemporary ecological imbalance, and personal reflection—particularly the experience of Indigenous womanhood shaped by living away from the ancestral homeland. Whether in large-scale installations or more intimate works, her works evoke a sense of introspection, restraint, and quiet intensity. The three works presented in this exhibition are woven compositions mounted on wooden frames; through layered crochet and interlacing structures, they construct complex imagery and subtle metaphors.
Eleng Luluan's important exhibitions include the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (The Immutable Spiritual Beliefs, Queensland Art Gallery, Australia, 2024), the Liverpool Biennial (uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost Things, UK, 2023), and Àbadakone, the international Indigenous contemporary art series organized by the National Gallery of Canada (2019). She was the recipient of the First Prize at the 3rd Pulima Art Award in 2016, and was previously nominated for the Taiwan Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Biennale. Eleng Luluan currently lives and works in Taimali, Taiwan.
